Landscape Design

Thoughtful landscaping can accomplish everything that green building is intended to do: conserve natural resources, promote healthy living and lower maintenance requirements for homeowners. As a child my job was to cut the grass and we had a huge lawn. The process of maintaining the lawn, shrubs, trees, plantings and gardens became a burden that consumed an alarming amount of water, energy and time. Here are some of the landscape details we like to discuss with clients prior to construction:
  • Collection systems that gather rain water from roof and store it for irrigation of lawn and plant beds.
  • Reducing solar and wind exposure on certain areas of the home with strategic plantings.
  • Coordination of native plantings and drought-tolerant species to conserve water, lower maintenance and decrease the need for pesticides.
  • Installing soaker hoses to drip water on plant roots and properly mulching plant beds to help retain the moisture.
